Entrance Loan Counseling

All students borrowing Federal Student Loans are required to complete entrance counseling. If this is the first time you've borrowed the type of federal loan offered in your financial aid notification, you must complete entrance counseling in order to receive your funding.

Stafford & Graduate PLUS Loan Entrance Counseling

If you are borrowing a Stafford or Graduate PLUS Loan, you must complete entrance loan counseling online. Before you begin your entrance counseling, it will be helpful to have the following information on hand:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your FAFSA PIN number
  • Your Financial Aid Award Letter
  • Three references including contact information (may be parents, other relatives, or friends)

How to Complete Your Counseling Requirement

  1. Go to www.studentloans.gov

    • Sign in with your Social Security number and your federal PIN
    • Click on the appropriate link for counseling (either Stafford or Graduate PLUS)
  2. Complete the online Entrance Loan Counseling

  3. Undergraduates Only: Complete a First-time Borrower Seminar

Duke will automatically receive notification when you have completed your counseling session and will credit your loan to your account.

Perkins & Institutional Loan Entrance Counseling

If you are borrowing a Perkins or an Institutional loan, you must complete entrance loan counseling online. Once you have accepted your loan on ACES, you will receive an email at your Duke address with a link to our entrance counseling servicer, ECSI. 

Note: Undergraduates will be required to complete the First-Time Borrowers' Seminar in addition to this counseling requirement in order to receive a loan.

Before you begin your entrance counseling, it will be helpful to have the following information on hand:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your ECSI PIN Number
  • Your Financial Aid Award Letter
  • Three references including contact information (may be parents, other relatives, or friends)

Simply click the link in your email and complete the online steps at ECSI to complete your counseling session.

First-Time Borrowers' Seminar (Undergraduates Only)

In order to complete the second part of your entrance counseling, you must attend the First-Time Borrowers' Seminar. For your convenience, we offer small group and individual sessions. In these sessions, you will learn how to limit your borrowing, live on the resources you have, manage the repayment of your loans, and learn about the qualifications to have your federal loans forgiven.

Registration is required.

For your convenience, we are offering several evening seminars this semester on East Campus in the White Lecture Hall (White 107) and in the Student Loan Office conference room 232.   Please choose one of the following links to reserve your space:

•    Thursday, October 2, 2014 5:30 – 6:30 PM  
•    Monday, October 13, 2014 4:00 – 5:00 PM 

•    Thursday, October 16, 2014 5:30-6:30 PM
•    Tuesday, October 21, 2014 5:30-6:30 PM
