For International Students

If you are an international student already receiving need-based aid from Duke, the following information can help you learn more about what’s covered, understand how to view and pay your bill, and find answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Note: Admitted international students who did not check the "financial aid interest" box on the admissions application are ineligible to apply for financial aid for any year of undergraduate study.  There are no need-based or merit scholarships available for international transfer students.

Renewing Your Aid

International students currently receiving aid will have their financial aid automatically renewed, and you do not need to reapply. You will receive your new financial aid notification in the first week of April.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Note: International applicants admitted with "no financial aid interest" are ineligible to apply for financial aid for any year of undergraduate study.  There are no need-based or merit scholarships available for international transfer students.

Health Insurance

All students are required to maintain adequate medical insurance during their enrollment at Duke University. International students receiving need-based aid will be automatically enrolled in the Duke Student Medical Insurance plan. Students receiving need-based financial aid will have the charge for the insurance automatically covered.

Understanding Your Bill and Student Account

Duke students can view information about their bill and student account in two ways:

The Monthly Billing Statement

Monthly Billing Statement
Best For: Viewing your bill before you start the semester
Purpose: Summarizes your transactions, including anticipated charges and expected financial aid, so you'll know what you owe
How to View:

Click "Billing History" in the Bursar section of DukeHub.

PDF Copies of the bill are also emailed to your preferred email address each month. If you've enabled Guest Access to your DukeHub account, you can request a copy be emailed to a guest as well.

For billing and due date schedules, visit bursar.duke.edu

The "View Account History" Screen in DukeHub

"Account History" Screen in Duke Hub
Best For: Viewing your account in real time after you arrive at Duke
Purpose: Displays all transactions in real time. View payments, refunds, and adjustments as they occur
How to View:

Click "View Account History" in the Bursar section of DukeHub).

If you've enabled Guest Access to your DukeHub account, you can request a guest be allowed access to view your account as well.

For billing and due date schedules, visit bursar.duke.edu.

Once a semester begins, we recommend using the "Account History" screen in DukeHub to view current charges. Charges will appear as positive numbers, and financial aid and payments will show as negative numbers that reduce your balance. Scroll to the current term and view the amount at the bottom of that term to see your current balance.

Payment Options

Accounts can be paid in a variety of ways:

  • Personal payments (by check, bank wire, e-check). Credit cards are not accepted.
  • Financial aid (scholarships)
  • Other, such as a 3rd party sponsor

Please note that loans are not available for international students.

For more information on payment options and schedules visit our payments page

Refunds

If your account has been overpaid (shown by a credit balance at the end of the "Account Activity" screen), you may be eligible for a refund. Keep in mind:

  • A refund appears as a charge to your student account to offset the credit balance.
  • Duke issues refunds by direct deposit.  If you haven’t already done so, please fill out a direct deposit authorization on DukeHub. This authorization can be found on the "Forms and Requests" page of DukeHub.
