Health Insurance

Because all students are required to maintain adequate health insurance, students are automatically charged for the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP) at the beginning of each year. The charge for the plan will remain on your bill if you do not take action by September 15th. To avoid this charge, please complete the waiver on your DukeHub.

  • If you have health insurance, please complete the WAIVER to provide proof of your current coverage. If the waiver is approved, the charge will be removed from your bill.

***If you already know that your plan will not meet Duke’s requirements, still complete the waiver so that we have record of your attempt. The waiver will be denied and you will be automatically enrolled in the Duke SMIP. If you are receiving need-based grant funding, our office will increase your aid to cover the cost.

  • If you don't already have health insurance and you are receiving need-based grant aid from Duke, you will also complete the WAIVER and indicate this when completing the process. Financial aid will cover the cost.

To begin the process you will need to log into the DukeHub and select “Forms and Requests”. You can view screenshots here.

  1. DO NOT CLICK ENROLL (unless you are choosing Duke's insurance in addition to your own and are prepared to cover the full cost). If you click "enroll" without completing the waiver process, financial aid will not cover the cost of your insurance.
    1. If you do already have health insurance, select to WAIVE and complete “My Current Insurance Plan or Policy”. Click "Submit for review" when done.
    2. If you don't already have health insurance, you can enter that you are not insured in the "Other Insurer" field and check the "no" boxes on the questionnaire. Click "Submit for review" when done.

If you do not complete the above steps by the deadline published by the Duke Student Health Insurance Office, you will be charged for the plan and the cost cannot be removed.
