For Current International Students

If you are a current international student already receiving need-based aid from Duke, read on to learn more about what’s covered, understand how to view and pay your bill, and find answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Unfortunately, if you are a current international student who did not check the "financial aid interest" box on your admissions application, you are ineligible to apply for financial aid while you are an undergraduate here at Duke. In addition, there are no need-based or merit scholarships available for international transfer students.

FAQs for Current International Students

International students currently receiving aid will have their financial aid automatically renewed, and you do not need to reapply.

Please note that if you're a current international student and you did not check the financial aid interest box on your admissions application, you won't be eligible for need-based aid while at Duke.

International students receiving need-based financial aid will be automatically enrolled in the Duke Student Medical Insurance plan. The charge for the insurance will be automatically covered with grant aid.

The Bursar's office manages billing and payment. If you have questions about charges, fees, payments, etc., they are your best resource. If you have questions about your financial aid on your bill, please contact us.

Please see the Bursar's page on making payments

Keep in mind that federal loans are not available for international students.

Students whose total credits exceed their total charges receive a refund of the difference.

If your account has been overpaid (shown by a credit balance at the end of the "What I Owe" screen in DukeHub), you may be eligible for a refund. Keep in mind:

  • A refund appears as a charge to your student account to offset the credit balance.
  • Duke issues refunds by direct deposit.  If you haven’t already done so, please fill out a direct deposit authorization on DukeHub. This authorization can be found on the "Forms and Requests" page of DukeHub.

Please visit our Awarding and Policy page.
